…Hobart also one of the friendliest!
The secret is out. The world is finally realising a fact that we Tasmanians have always known: Our capital city, Hobart, is one of the best cities in the world. In 2012 we brought you news that Lonely Planet, the largest publisher of travel guidebooks in the world – and one of the world’s leading authorities on travel – had named Hobart as one of the World’s Top Ten Cities to visit in 2013. Now, our wonderful city has also been voted one of the World’s Friendliest Cities by Condé Nast Traveler Magazine.
In 2012, after months of debate, Lonely Planet declared Hobart as number seven on the list of the World’s Top Ten Cities to visit in 2013. Accompanied in the top ten by cultural hubs San Francisco, Amsterdam and Beijing, Hobart was described as being “best for events, culture and food”. Describing Hobart as a harbour town with a reputation for attracting the ‘outdoorsy’ type, Lonely Planet recognised that, in 2013, Hobart’s cultural and culinary credentials would continue to rise.
Feeling pretty chuffed that our home city had received such an accolade, it was a delight to see the announcement that Hobart has also just been voted as the second friendliest city in the world by Condé Nast Traveler’s 2012 Reader’s Choice awards. For over 25 years these awards have been an acclaimed “seal of approval…from the world’s most discriminating travelers”. And the 2012 awards were no exception, with 47,000 travellers contributing to the survey. That’s a lot of people who love Hobart! With a Reader’s rating of 95.4, Hobart came second only to Florianopolis, Brazil, with a score of 95.8.
Praised by voters for its “unique location, beauty and kind, friendly city natives”, mention was also made of Hobart’s “pristine natural beauty” and wealth of “distinctive mountains, beaches and animals”. One of the surveyed travellers even described Hobart as “one of the best places I’ve visited”.
So, the secret is out. We’re proud to see that others love Hobart as much as we do – and we’re happy to share!
