Vocational Courses at TasTAFE
A qualification from TasTAFE will provide you with the practical workplace knowledge and skills that are in demand in industries across the world. If you are also seeking a university qualification, the successful completion of your TAFE education may provide you with advanced standing into university degrees across Australia. TasTAFE offers Diploma + Degree pathways to the University of Tasmania, which provide graduates with both a TasTAFE qualification and a university degree.
TasTAFE is the largest Registered Training Organisation (RTO) in Tasmania and one of the 10 largest RTOs in Australia. Owned by the Tasmanian Government, TasTAFE offers a wide range of nationally-recognised qualifications from Certificate III to Advanced Diploma level to local and international students.
TasTAFE delivers training that focuses on teaching students the knowledge and skills required for specific industry workplaces. Learning in a vocational training environment will give you the opportunity to obtain practical experience from your studies, explore your desired industry, gain familiarity of workplace environments and develop employability skills. Training is delivered by industry-qualified teachers. This means that they have the experience and knowledge to teach you the skills you need for your chosen career.
Vocational education is, by nature, very practical and hands-on. You will learn the necessary theory and how to apply this in real-life situations. Most TasTAFE courses also provide industry work experience placements where you can apply your learning in a genuine work environment.
For example, students studying hospitality will gain experience in TasTAFE’s hospitality outlets and complete placements in local restaurants, cafés and hotels. Nursing students, as a further example, will complete over 400 hours of clinical placement in aged care, community care and acute care settings.

English Language Program
Every course at TasTAFE has an English language requirement. If you need a little help with your English before you start one of our courses, or just have an interest in improving you English language skills, TasTAFE’s English Language Centres can help.
Our experienced teachers ensure that different learning styles are catered for, and will work on your English listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills in interactive classes. Assignments will include written essays, oral presentations, role-playing, and learning activities.
English Programs Offered
TasTAFE provides English courses for students with a range of English language skill levels. The English programs offered are the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program, and the Certificates in Spoken and Written English (CSWE) program.

Fees: AU$320 per week*
Intake: Hobart Campus – every five weeks February – November
Launceston Campus – February, May, July, October
*Please note: to study the EAP program, students will be required to purchase a grammar textbook at an additional one-off cost of AU$80.

Art & Design

Employment opportunities include a career in the Early Childhood Education and Care sector working with children in long day care centres, outside school hours care services or family day care, or a role as a teacher assistant in kindergartens, primary and secondary schools or colleges.
Aged and Community Care
Few professions offer the opportunities, challenges and rewards available to people working in the health, aged care and disability services industries.
Employment opportunities in these vital sectors are strong and varied. A qualification in one of these areas are highly sought after – with the sectors being considered as some of Tasmania’s (and Australia’s) largest employment growth areas.
Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing, Home and Community) graduates have the opportunity to work in community health and/or residential setting which provides individual -centered support to people who may require support due to ageing, disability or some other reason.
The combined aged care and Home and Community Care qualification allow graduates to seek employment in a variety of locations and service environments, primary and community health, aged care, home-based and mental health settings, as well as group homes, day support programs, leisure and recreation facilities, employment support services and advocacy organisations.
Like all other Australian education providers, the entry requirement for studying at TasTAFE is English Language understanding – all of our courses are delivered in English.
If you do not meet the minimum English language requirement for direct entry into your chosen course (see table below), TasTAFE can offer you tuition at the English Language Centres located in Hobart or Launceston.
TasTAFE accepts English language scores from IELTS, TOEFL and the Pearson Test for English. Please submit your latest education transcript and English test results with your application form so that our admissions team can process your application quickly.
If you have not completed one of the above-mentioned English language tests, TasTAFE can provide you with an Oxford Online test to complete.
Please note: Whilst the Oxford Online test is accepted by TasTAFE as a demonstration of English Language level, the Department of Immigration and Border Protection may require an IELTS test as part of your student visa application process.
