Hosting is generally seen as a voluntary activity, with payments viewed as reimbursements rather than taxable income. However, it’s always best to seek personalised advice from a tax accountant.

We are one of the only states in Australia that manage our homestay team in-house. This means that we have a dedicated team of staff (based in Hobart and Launceston) who are here to assist when you have questions or if any issues pop up.

Of course!  We have a number of hosts who have spare rooms and who enjoy short term hosting, so if you have a longer-term student who wants to stay over the summer holidays and you are going away or have family coming and need the space we can assist.
Typically, when we place a student with you, we would let you know how long they would stay and if they would be here over the summer break so you can take this into account when making a decision to host.
Most students are expected to return home over the long-term breaks as it gives them a chance to spend time with their families which is important.

If you have work commitments, weddings, or holidays, please inform us in advance. We will arrange for a temporary host to care for your student, ideally placing them with school friends or in a nearby location for familiarity. We want you to continue enjoying your life while hosting.

Like any relationship, hosting can have its ups and downs. If the match is not working, please notify our team. We will explore options to improve the situation, and if necessary, we can facilitate a move, typically within a week or two.
