Dependent Students

Dependent students are international students who enrol in Tasmanian Government Schools and Senior Secondary Colleges, whilst living with a parent or a guardian who is in Australia to work, study or is in the process of migrating.

This includes parents or guardians who are in Tasmania on:

• Temporary business entry
• Short business visitor visa
• Student visa
• Sponsored training visa
• Medical practitioner visa
• Bridging visa

Just like Australian students, dependent students normally study at the government school that is nearest to their Tasmanian residential address. GETI Tasmania can provide advice on which school this is, if required.

Dependent students are usually required to pay tuition fees for their time in Tasmanian Government schools, but the fees and the application process are different to that of other international students.

Whether or not they have to pay fees will depend on what kind of visa their parent or guardian holds. These rules are set by Australia’s Department of Immigration and Border Protection.

Tuition fees

If you are assessed as being required to pay tuition fees, GETI Tasmania will administer the payment.

The tuition fees are to be paid in full prior to enrolment.

Fees for Kindergarten:

  • Full year – AU$3,750
  • Per term – AU$937.50
  • Per week – AU$110

Fees for schools (Prep to Year 12):

  • Full year – AU$7,500
  • Per term – AU$1,875
  • Per week – AU$220

In addition to tuition fees, all dependent students are required to pay compulsory school levies. School levies are approximately AU$300 – 700 per year and should be paid directly to the school at the time of enrolment.

Each school sets their own price for levies. This money helps the school to deliver a variety of services and programs for students. However, school uniforms, books and some excursions must all be purchased separately.
