International student advisors
All Tasmanian Government Schools and TasTAFE campuses have dedicated student advisors to support you throughout your studies. Available on Monday – Friday, from 8:30am – 5:00pm (in person or via phone and email), the student advisors will provide you with advice on settling in to Tasmania, manage your orientation, and be the first point of contact if you ever have any problems or issues.
Your international student advisor will liaise with teaching and other school or TasTAFE staff to monitor your academic progress. If you require a course change, or want some advice about planning your study pathway, your international advisor will give you all of the answers you require.
Teaching staff are also able to provide you with learning support. In Australia, teachers are focused on ensuring the success of their students, therefore questions and requests for extra help are rewarded with time, attention and assistance.
24/7 emergency phone line
A 24 hour per day, 7 day per week emergency phone line is provided for all international students studying at Tasmania’s Government Schools or TasTAFE. If any student is ever in trouble of any kind, help is never far away.
Language and learning support
Tasmania’s Government schools and TasTAFE offer dedicated English support for international students. If you require assistance with new English terms and words, or would like more detailed assistance, this is available alongside your course tuition for no extra cost.
Before you leave your home country, we send you a pre-departure guide which provides helpful information about living in Tasmania. The information provided in the guide covers things like flights, clothing, cost of living, shopping, transport and banking. We are also happy to answer any other questions that you may have about your life in Tasmania. You can also download a TasTAFE pre-departure guide here and Tasmanian Government Schools pre-departure guide here.
You will be met at the airport upon your first arrival and taken to your accommodation so you can settle in. There is no airport pick-up fee charged by the Tasmanian Government for your first arrival.
Banking and phone set-up
Upon your arrival in Tasmania, we assist you with setting up a mobile phone and a bank account.
All international students at Tasmania’s Government Schools and TasTAFE receive a detailed course orientation prior to commencing their studies. The orientation includes an outline of the subjects that will be studied, the number of tuition hours each week and timetables for classes, and also establishes the expectations of students.
Student cafes and study facilities
All campuses are serviced by canteens that serve both hot and cold food and drinks for students. Modern library and computer facilities are available on campus to all students throughout the study week.
Most of the schools in the Tasmanian Government Schools Program offer a Buddy System. Your buddy will be a local Tasmanian student who can show you around the school, give you information on activities, and help you settle in and make friends.
