If you are living with a TGEI homestay family

If you are living with one of our host families, it’s normal to want to know as much as possible before you arrive in Tasmania. We do our best to match you with a host who will make you feel welcome and supported.

Other key information

Orientation sessions (your first official welcome)

Our orientations are conducted in-person at each school, or at a central venue if student numbers are large enough. These sessions run only for part of the day and are designed to give students an introduction to their local area, school environment, living in Tasmania and in homestay and key support contacts.

South (Hobart)

  • Orientation will be held on Friday, 24 July at Elizabeth College from 10.00 am to 2.00 pm.
  • Orientation details will be sent to hosts and students.
  • Lunch and snacks will be provided – please bring your own drink bottle.
  • There will be an additional session (to be advised) for the South for those students arriving on or after 24 July. This will happen in the first week of school commencing 27 July (date and details to be advised).
  • Attending orientation is compulsory. Failure to attend without a valid reason can result in a conduct warning.

North (Launceston)

  • Orientation will be held on Monday, 27 July at Newstead College .
  • Orientation time and details will be sent to hosts and students.
  • Lunch and snacks will be provided – please bring your own drink bottle.
  • If you arrive after this time, the TGEI team will contact you directly to arrange an orientation.
  • Attending orientation is compulsory. Failure to attend without a valid reason can result in a conduct warning.

North (Devonport)

  • the TGEI team will contact you directly to arrange an orientation.
  • Attending orientation is compulsory. Failure to attend without a valid reason can result in a conduct warning.

Other key information

What to do

  • Arrive at your school between 8.20 am to 8.30 am on Monday 27 July.
  • Go to the Main Administration Office, say “I am a new international student” and ask for the International Student Advisor (ISA).

What to bring

  • Your passport
  • A copy of your visa (Immi Grant Notification letter)
  • Your Tasmanian address
  • Your host or guardian’s mobile phone number.

Stay connected

You are required to have a local mobile phone number while studying in Tasmania so that you can stay in touch and be contacted if needed. This is an important mandatory requirement that supports your safety and wellbeing.

School uniform

Senior High School (Year 11 and Year 12)

Senior High School students do NOT wear a uniform in Tasmania. You should dress in comfortable clothes appropriate for the weather.

Junior High School (Years 7 to 10)

Each school organises its uniforms in its own way, with different rules, dress codes, and methods for ordering what you need.

The links below are the uniform information published by each junior high school. In some cases, you will see an online ordering option, but we strongly recommend you wait and purchase your uniform in person after you arrive in Tasmania – your host family can help you with this, including contacting with your school.

Not all uniform items listed by schools are required. Some items are optional. We recommend you start with a basic uniform set and then add items later if needed.

Students are responsible for paying for their own uniform. Please make sure you have enough money available to purchase your uniform soon after arrival.

Please note: TGEI cannot answer questions about school uniform items, sizes, or ordering. If you have questions, please speak with your host family or your school after you arrive.

Airport pickup

  • If you are in the TGEI-managed homestay program, you will be met at the airport and taken to your accommodation
  • If you are in private arranged homestay or with a guardian, you are responsible for your own arrangements.
